Help with Insurance Claims

For All Land Trusts Making Insurance Claims

  1. Be sure to protect your property by putting tarps on roofs, boarding up broken windows and getting personal property (furniture, computers etc.) to a safe place.  The cost for this can be included in your claim.
  2. Be cautious when selecting a contractor since disasters can attract contractors that more interested in making a quick buck than properly repairing your building or home and helping you document the cost.
  3. Any structure that water got into it should be dried and cleaned by a professional. There are several national companies that specialize in drying out structures.  They are ServiceMaster, 800-937-3783, Servpro, 800-737-8776, and Purofirst, 800-500-2399 and they have pre-approved rates with the insurance companies.
  4. Document your cost with receipts, estimates and invoices.  If possible include a summary of the cost in a Spreadsheet and be sure to total the cost.
  5. A well documented and organized claim will usually be paid faster, especially in the event of a large scale disaster.
