Land Trust Alliance is pleased to announce the recent hiring of several new staff to key positions within the organization, including:

Sylvia Bates, Director of Standards & Research

Sylvia Bates

Sylvia Bates will join Land Trust Alliance on July 5th as our new Director of Standards and Research. One of the national experts on Land Trust Standards and Practices, Sylvia worked on the revision of this important document and the updated guidebook that is due out later this summer.

Sylvia has almost 20 years of experience in land conservation, the last eight years as an independent consultant and real estate broker, providing assistance to land trusts, landowners and public agencies on land conservation projects and related initiatives, easement stewardship, and organizational development issues.

She has also worked as a trainer and consultant for Land Trust Alliance in areas such as planning for accreditation, delivery of assessments, research projects, and Land Trust Standards and Practices outreach.  A frequent speaker and workshop presenter locally and nationally, Sylvia has been active in the land conservation field since 1987 and has the respect of land trusts and other conservationists across the country.

In her new role at Land Trust Alliance, Sylvia will lead our work on Land Trust Standards and Practices, land trust assessments, the new training curriculum for Land Trust Standards and Practices and other cutting-edge issues, new initiatives in easement defense, and research.  She will work from her home office in New Hampshire.  She can be reached at sbates@lta.org. Please join us in welcoming Sylvia to her important new post.

Lynne Sherrod, Western Policy Manager

Lynne Sherrod will join Land Trust Alliance on July 24th as the Western Policy Manager.  She comes from Colorado where she served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Cattlemen's Agricultural Land Trust (CCALT) for the past nine years.  She has a solid foundation in land conservation and has worked extensively with a variety of partners and diverse interests, building bipartisan and positive political support from the grassroots level and up.  She is deeply committed to preservation of the West that she grew up loving and caring for.  CCALT has partnered with more than 125 ranching families in the protection of 225,000 acres.  CCALT was named in Livestock Market Digest’s Digest 25, as one of the top 25 persons or organizations having a positive impact on the American Livestock Industry.

Lynne has held leadership posts with numerous groups, boards and advisory boards, steering committees and funders. These include the Partnership for Rangeland Trusts, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, The Nature Conservancy (Yampa Valley Advisory Board), Colorado Agricultural Leadership Associates, Colorado CattleWomen, Orton Family Foundation, Yampa Valley Beef (founding member), the Colorado State Fair and more.  Her work with the Yampa River System Legacy Project advanced conservation incentives for private landowners and leveraged more than $12 million into the Yampa Valley, prompting awards from the Governor’s Smart Growth Initiative and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.  Her other awards include Land Steward of the Year (Colorado Wildlife Society), Land Conservation Excellence Award (Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts), and the Wirth Chair at University of Colorado Community Award.

As the Western Policy Manager for Land Trust Alliance, Lynne will be working exclusively with the western land trust community on policy issues and will serve with them in establishing a western voice at the national level.  She will be working from Grand Junction, Colorado, and will be reachable at lsherrod@lta.org after her start date of July 24th.

Erin Heskett, Midwest Director
Erin Heskett and Family
Erin Heskett, with his daughter April and wife Ann.

Erin Heskett joined Land Trust Alliance as our new Midwest Director on June 12.  Erin comes to us with nearly 18 years of public and non-profit service in the environmental field, with skills including conservation management, multi-party facilitation, public affairs, and policy advocacy at the local, national and international level.  His diverse experience ranges from the Peace Corps in Senegal to conservation of international marine resources, and environmental initiatives with the US Environmental Protection Agency.  A common thread of his professional career has been developing resource conservation projects with local communities.

His early experience with the Peace Corps was of this nature, where he worked with the Senegal Park Service to develop a management plan for Niokolo-Koba National Park (a Biosphere Reserve) and partnership projects with local residents adjoining the Park.  With the US EPA in New England, Erin facilitated successful collaborations between industry, state and federal government, and environmental organizations to resolve environmental disputes.

For the past five years, Erin served as the Senior Program Officer of the Wildlife and Habitat Protection Department (WHP) at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), based in Hyannis, Massachusetts.  There, he developed and implemented campaign strategies and policy initiatives to address human threats to wildlife habitat and the international marine environment.  Erin holds a M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy from Tufts University, and has served on several federal advisory committees to address wildlife and habitat conservation issues.

We apologize in advance for any confusion caused by our having not one, but two, Erin’s in our Midwest Office!  Erin Jordan recently joined us as a part-time Midwest Program Assistant, and we're sure both of them look forward to getting to know you better as we work together to conserve the great lands of the Midwest.

Please join us in welcoming Erin Heskett to his new post.  He can be reached at eheskett@lta.org or by telephone at 269-324-1683.
