Our History

Year Founded: 1982

Founded by: Land Trusts

Reason: Expand knowledge and expertise to protect land by sharing information and resources through a national organization.

The Land Trust Alliance has led the private land conservation movement through an extraordinary period of expansion and success as the number of nonprofit land trusts nearly tripled in just two decades.

When the Alliance was created, there were fewer than 450 local and state land trusts. Many of them were operating in isolation and seeking to learn how others were effectively protecting open spaces.

Today, there are more than 1,600 local and statel land trusts, and Alliance has grown to lead a vast movement that is touching the very heart of America's concerns: the protection of open spaces.

The nucleus in an ever-widening circle of nonprofit land trusts, the Alliance has become the pre-eminent service provider to the nation's private land conservation community.

The Land Trust Alliance is the only organization dedicated to the effectiveness and sustainability of the nation's land trusts and their use of conservation easements.

A 501(c)3 charitable organization, the Land Trust Alliance is governed by a board of directors. Its 40-member staff operates from headquarters in Washington, DC and regional programs located throughout the country.

More than 1000 land trusts are members of the Land Trust Alliance, and approximately 1.5 million people are supporters and members of land trusts.
