The Land Trust
Alliance has led the private land conservation movement
through an extraordinary period of expansion and success
as the number of nonprofit land trusts nearly tripled in
just two decades.

When the Alliance
was created, there were fewer than 450 local and state
land trusts. Many of them were operating in isolation and
seeking to learn how others were effectively protecting
open spaces.

Today, there
are more than 1,600 local and statel land trusts, and
Alliance has grown to lead a vast movement that is touching
the very heart of America's concerns: the protection of
open spaces.
The nucleus in
an ever-widening circle of nonprofit land trusts, the Alliance has
become the pre-eminent service provider to the nation's private
land conservation community.
The Land Trust Alliance is the only
organization dedicated to the effectiveness and sustainability
of the nation's land trusts and their use of conservation
easements.
A 501(c)3 charitable
organization, the Land Trust Alliance is governed by a board of directors.
Its 40-member staff operates from headquarters in Washington,
DC and regional programs located throughout the country.
More than 1000
land trusts are members
of the Land Trust Alliance, and approximately 1.5 million
people are supporters and members of land trusts.
